Identity
The work of several generations of energetic people has created today’s Carlsberg Group. This cultural and economical achievement is displayed by high quality of the architecture, the gardens and free spaces on the Carlsberg’s brewery ground in Copenhagen. The present concept aims to unveil the Carlsberg site’s special characteristic, the atmosphere and to overlay it with a new urban structure – side om side. The new, urban structure offers complex spaces, which are open for a multilayered living together, cultural changes and further social developments. A city that challenges the future – having the base on its own historical culture.

Forth stands the quality of life
Diverse people, townsfolk (townsman, townspeople, urbanites, city dweller) are living, working and residing (live, dwell, room), constituting the community – Carlsberg by – side om side. Allocation of space – framework – for diverse forms of living and working. The area is divided in different scopes each with a differentiated denseness, housing, character and atmosphere. The area around the power house, with the Boulevard Ny Carlsberg Vej, is the heart of the Carlsberg by. A number of Carlsberg A/S´s listed buildings are located here as well as new cultural facilities such as theatre, art and culture. Additionally shops, bars, restaurants enliven the central city space with labels (music, fashion). Offices and Carlsberg’s headquarter supplement the Carlsberg centre with social, local facilities (kindergarden and meeting of citizens).
A vibrant city that sets a high standard for quality of life.

Urban form
The area’s arrangement of differentiated scopes with specific characteristics is displayed in the implementation (moulding) of the urban figure. The central scope (Ny Carlsberg Vej) forms a distinct figuration with a high density and higher buildings as in the northern and southern parts. The height and proportion of the construction area and new buildings is aligned with the surrounding construction or rather reacts to the site’s particularity. In the central scope the urbanite expression of the concept – side om side – is a coherent plateau with several layers and levels which extends from the Gamle Carlsberg Vej till the Vesterfaelledvej. It accomodates different activities (ranging from shops, cultural facilities to parking) and provides free spaces (sport and recreation) on the different layers. These plateaus are public and offer city life on several layers. The urban platform renders possible that different activities enrich one another, for example the university and the Carlsberg Research.
